ADAPTIVE DRIVING IDAHO
Driver Readiness Assessments
Driving is more than a skill; it's independence, freedom, and connection to everyday life. For many individuals, especially those with cognitive, neurological, or developmental differences, learning to drive can come with unique challenges.

At Adaptive Driving Idaho, we provide occupational therapy-based Driving Readiness Evaluations designed to assess the skills needed for safe and successful driving. Our approach focuses on the whole person-identifying strengths, addressing barriers, and supporting each individual's potential for independence.

Evaluations are completed by a licensed Occupational Therapist with advanced training in driving rehabilitation, ensuring a clinical, evidence-based approach to determine readiness to drive.

What to Expect
We take a personalized, step-by-step approach to help individuals and families navigate the path towards driving.
Your evaluation includes a Clinical Evaluation and In-Vehicle Passenger Assessment:
Part 1: Clinical Assessment of Driving Related Skills
-
Evaluation of vision, cognition, motor skills, reaction time, and other key abilities related to driving
-
Individualized recommendations
-
Clear guidance on readiness, areas for improvement, and next steps
Part 2: In-Vehicle Passenger Assessment:
This step helps bridge the gap between clinic-based testing and real-world driving demands. Following the clinical portion, the individual rides as a passenger while we assess key skills needed for driving, including:
-
Attention and focus in a dynamic environment
-
Processing speed and response to changing situations
-
Visual scanning and awareness
-
Executive functioning and decision-making
We recognize that being in a moving vehicle can be sensory-rich and overwhelming for some individuals. This portion allows us to identify how sensory processing, regulation, and environmental demands may impact driving performance.
When appropriate, we provide personalized strategies and supports to improve comfort, regulation, and overall readiness for driving.

Who Could Benefit from a Driver Readiness Assessment?

-
Individuals learning to drive for the first time and may need additional support
-
Individuals who have developmental or neurodiverse learning profiles
-
Individuals who have neurological conditions (stroke, brain injury, etc.) and want an objective assessment of driving readiness
What Makes Us Different
Unlike traditional driving schools, this is a medical-based evaluation, not just instruction. Our goal is not to teach driving-but to determine if driving is safe, appropriate, and achievable, and how to get there.
